Initially, the images of the satellite of the European Space Agency Sentinel-2a were intended for specialists dealing with environmental issues, the growth of megacities and the productivity of agricultural crops. For six months the satellite has been surveying the surface of the Earth in optical and infrared light in a test mode.

From now on, these digital images will become the property of millions of Internet users, for which they just need to register .

The European Space Agency has the right to count on the huge interest in images, as evidenced by tens of thousands of registered users of the Network.

Prior to this, one of the main sources of photographs of the Earth were the US spacecraft Landsat, who worked in orbit for more than 40 years. Sentinel-2a will complement their efforts, providing photographs of a higher quality. The satellite cameras cover a 290 km wide strip, which is 65 km larger than the “Americans”. The same can be said about the quality of the images – color images have a better resolution. The Director of ESA Earth Observation, Volker Liebig, is full of optimism:

“We expect unprecedented demand for video from our satellite. Its volumes will be measured in petabytes. “
